HIGH-EXPLOSIVE BOMB EX 115 MOD O HELICOPTER TRAP WEAPON DEVELOPMENT, TEST, AND EVALUATION.

Abstract:
THE DESCRIPTION OF THE DEVELOPMENT AND EVALUATION HISTORY OF THE HELICOPTER TRAP WEAPON (EX 115 MOD O HIGH-EXPLOSIVE BOMB) ARE PRESENTED. ASSEMBLY, FUZING AND DEFUZING PROCEDURES ARE GIVEN, TOGETHER WITH SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND RECOMMENDED DELIVERY TACTICS. THE WEAPON IS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR CLEARING SMALL MENDED DELIVERY TACTICS. THE WEAPON IS DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR CLEARING SMALL AREAS COVERED BY LIGHT BRUSH, BAMBOO, OR OTHER SIMILAR MATERIALS USED BY THE ENEMY TO DENY HELICOPTER LANDINGS. THE WEAPON HAS A MAXIMUM LENGTH OF 31.5 INCHES AND AN OVERALL LOADED WEIGHT OF 55 LB. CONCLUSIONS: THIS REPORT CONCLUDES THE NOTS EFFORTS TO DEVELOP, TEST AND EVALUATE THE HELICOPTER TRAP WEAPON. IT IS FELT THAT THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS OF THIS PROGRAM HAVE BEEN DEMONSTRATED AND SATISFIED. THE FOLLOWING COMMENTS RELATE TO THE CONCLUSIONS REACHED DURING THE PERIOD OF DEVELOPMENT. THE BOMB IS ASSEMBLED FROM ITEMS DEVELOPED BY PREVIOUS PROGRAMS. SOME OF THESE ITEMS HAD TO BE MODIFIED TO ASSURE INTERFACE COMPATIBILITY. WHERE POSSIBLE, FULLY DEVELOPED ORDNANCE ITEMS WERE UTILIZED IN AN EFFORT TO PREVENT DELAYS RESULTING FROM LONG AND COSTLY EVALUATION PROGRAMS. THE USE OF THE M155A1 FUZE WAS PREDICATED ON LOW AND SLOW DELIVERY TACTICS INTIMATED BY HELICOPTER CARRIAGE. THE CONTINUOUS-ROD WARHEAD HAS BEEN PROVEN TO BE FAR SUPERIOR TO SIMILAR SIZED FRAGMENTING-BLAST WARHEADS FOR CLEARING OBSTACLES OF THE 2- X 4-INCH, 4- X 4-INCH, OR 4-INCH DIAMETER BAMBOO CLASS.
